About Subscription Services

SPACE IS LIMITED
Subscription services are designed for businesses who want to level out their attorney expenses over the course of the year and benefit from proactive legal care. You’ll like it because it means you won’t get shocking legal bills. I like it because it means I get to worry more about doing good work for you rather than billing every tenth of an hour. More importantly, it helps us both be on the same page so we can ensure we’re doing things that are best for your business.

Pricing EXAMPLES

The big question is how much is the subscription fee and what’s included? To be honest, it’s something we’ll have to talk about. It depends on how much work you’re going to ask me to do. You might be able to tell me, “Hey Leland, I keep having issues in such-and-such area,” or “I spent $x on attorney’s fees last year, can you help me bring that down?” I can tailor a subscription to your needs and I want to cover as much as I reasonably can for you. But here’s a breakdown of the general concept:

Scope of Subscription

The subscription service applies to “smaller projects.” I don’t have an exact definition for this but it’s matters that I think will take 1-3 hours of work. It basically includes matters that can be handled with relatively minor investigation, research, or drafting. Most issues are likely to fall within “smaller projects.”

Subscription services are mostly based on trust. I’ll trust that you won’t overload me based on the subscription you select and you’ll have to trust that I’ll let you know if a particular project is too big or requires specialization from others. Here are some things I know will not be part of the subscription right off the bat: securities (ie: blue sky laws), patents, personal estate planning, taxes and financials (I’ll work with your CPA on these), and litigation. I can get you in contact with attorneys who will charge fair prices for these issues. I can handle litigation but it will be in a separate agreement.

Comparison to Other Subscription Services

I’ve looked into other subscription services like those offered through LegalZoom or LegalShield. You should form your own opinions on those (if you’re interested in them). But in my view there are a lot of limitations. For instance, they may offer 30 minutes of consultation time for any given issue. In my experience, most attorneys offer a free 30 minute consultation to talk about your issue anyway. Then you pay a discounted rate for services beyond that. There’s probably good value if your issue is simple enough. But ultimately, in my opinion, you end up basically paying to be referred to the law firm that’s associated with the subscription provider.

I agree with the subscription concept but I don’t think legal services are ready to be commoditized in that way just yet. Maybe we’ll eventually create AI that can do that. Or maybe we can just simplify the law?

Thanks for reading! If you want to talk more about these subscription plans, let’s talk!
